國小安排---Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School

請誠學弟幫忙詢問了CHAMPAIGN和URBANA兩個城市的國小差別~ 在UIUC附近的URBANS DISTRICT #116是採學區制,但對於非英語系國家的小孩,有ESL(English as a Second Language)課程,若小孩英語測試未過的話要集中在KING school(Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School)上ESL課程,有中文的老師,待一年測驗及格後再回原學區學校就讀!

Dear Mr. Chiu,

My name is Jennifer Hixson. I am the Multicultural Program Director for the Urbana Schools. Dr. Jennifer Ivory-Tatum forwarded your message to me and asked that I respond.

First of all, let me welcome you and your family to Urbana and to the Urbana School District. I am glad that you contacted us with your questions about enrollment. We are always happy to help and it is better to ask ahead of time so that you will feel secure in what you are doing for your children.

Elementary school attendance districts in Urbana are based on where you live. But, students who are limited English proficient have the opportunity to attend King Elementary School no matter where they live within Urbana.

If you speak a language other than English in your home your children will be tested to determine their level of English Language Proficiency. If your children do not pass the test, it will be suggested that they attend a school where English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are offered. This is the parents' decision, but it is highly recommended. The elementary school for Mandarin speakers is King Elementary. King has a very diverse population, provides ESL classes and Native Language classes in many languages.

Following is a little bit of information that you might find useful when registering your children for school. Central registration is August 4th-6th and August 13th at Urbana Middle School. If you are not in town at that time, you can register your children directly at King after the 13th.

When you register for school you will need to have three things:

1. You will need to bring proof of residency in Urbana. This can be a lease/rental agreement or a utilities bill, etc. addressed to you at your Urbana address.
2. You also need to show proof of your child's age. This can be a birth certificate or passport, etc.
3. You will need to have an Identification card that has your picture on it, so that we know that you are who you say you are. This can be a passport, driver's license, university ID, state ID, etc.

Your child will also have to have a physical exam by a doctor in Illinois. You can get the form for the physical at the elementary school for the area in which you live or you can download the form off the district website. Part of this exam entails making sure that all students have all of the immunizations required by state and federal regulations. The doctor will want to have some record of the immunizations that your child has already had. So, bring your children’s immunization records with you. We don't want children to get immunizations that they don't need, but we must be sure that all students have had all the immunizations required. So, any information that you bring to the doctor with you will help the doctor know which, if any, of the immunizations your child will need. This examination can be done by any doctor in Illinois, but there is also a health clinic in our high school that can help with this. The number for the health clinic in the high school is (217) 239-4220. You will have 30 days after you have registered to get the physical examination completed.

The state now also requires a dental exam.

If you think that you might qualify for free or reduced-price lunches you should bring something that shows how much money you will make. The secretary will help you figure out if you qualify or not. There is a formula based on monthly income and the number of people who live in your household.

The registration fee for one year is $100.00. Books are loaned to students and they receive the books at school during the first week of classes. We don't ask students to buy books here. The fee that you pay will cover the cost of using the school books during the year. You will be asked to buy some school supplies. The school supply list will be given to you when you register.

I hope that this answers most of your questions. If you have more questions, please ask. I am always glad to help.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Hixson

Thank you for your email. Yes, your children may attend King School. They will be assessed by our English as a Second Language (ESL) team to determine their eligibility. If they are eligible to receive ESL services, then they may attend King regardless of your address.

I have copied your email and my response to our Multicultural Director and she may follow up with you.

Dear principal Ivory-Tatum,
I am Yi-Chich Chiu come from Taiwan. I am being a visiting scholar of UIUC in this coming August and will stay one year for my advanced research work in UIUC. And my family will go with me together to Illinois. Now I am looking for an elementary school for my three children who are 5, 7, 10 years old, respectively. I surf the website of elementary school in Urbana district #116 and I really love your school in many aspects such as many children coming from diverse country, the school mission, rich learning environments and enthusiastic teachers and staffs, and so on. I believe if there is an opportunity to learn in your school it would be much helpful for my children. Therefore, I really expect that my children can be the students of the Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School. But I have question that I will rent an apartment which is located on 510 E. Michigan Ave. Whether my children can enroll in your school in this coming fall semester or not? It would be highly appreciated for your reply. Thank you very much.

Sincerely Best regards

Yi-Chich Chiu
