I liked baseball very much from childhood. My neighbors and I used to play baseball in the paddy field after the rice was harvested, especially in the evening of summer time. It is a good memory in my mind.
Now, I have this opportunity to stay in US for a whole year so that I am eager to go to the stadium to watch the game of Major League Baseball. This weekend (on the 18th of April, 2010), it was sunny with mild temperatures so my three children, Eliza and I went to the Busch Stadium to watch the baseball game of the team Cardinals, St. Louis, versus the team Mets, New York. We were so excited! We sang songs, ate snacks, chatted with each other in my HAPPY minivan on the road.
Wa! How huge and magnificent the Busch Stadium is! And so many people went to the baseball field to watch this premium game. I believe the audience count was more than forty-five thousand. How amazing it was! We bought the third level of outfield tickets so we had a nice bird’s-eye view to look around the whole stadium but it was not so clear to watch the baseball STARs from our seats. However, we were still excited and enjoyed watching this game because this was our first time to watch the REAL baseball game in an on-site field, especially for the baseball game of high quality worldwide.
It deserves to be mentioned that there was a special event in this three-series of games held this weekend, called “Kids Opening Weekend” because the team Cardinals wanted to encourage the kids who went out to the stadium to watch the baseball game with their family. In this event, every kid would receive a free ticket to watch another upcoming game, and had a triangle banner as a gift. In addition, they allowed all kids to run the bases after the game finished. My kids were more interested to run the bases in the field than watching the baseball competition.
At the beginning of the game, these two pitchers did an excellent pitching job and controlled the tempo of the game. Consequently, it was hard for either team to have a chance to run back to the home base. The game lasted almost 3 hours and came to the ninth inning. Each team still kept the score of “0”. What a happening it was! It was unbelievable! Some audience left the field and caused a lot of vacant in-field seats. To make clearer watching, we moved and sat on the in-field seats to watch the extended inning game. At that time, I thought it would be game over soon based on the past MLB experience. It made the fans of team Cardinals mad and angry that there were many chances in team Cardinals side to get a score to finish the LONG, LONG game. But for some unaccountable reason, it still kept zero score till the 18th inning.
In the subsequent 19th inning of the game, there was no professional pitcher who could be assigned to take this pitching task in the team Cardinals side. Therefore, the general coach of team Cardinals, assigned an out-field player, Joe Mather, in charge of the HARD pitching. The Mets merely got one score in this RIDICULOUS inning, even if, I thought, team Cardinals wanted to end up this game. When the team Mets got one score, my kids cheered and applauded although we stood on the team Cardinals side. They really expected to run the bases in the field after the game was over and they waited and waited for more than 6 hours. But, unfortunately, the team Cardinals also got one score in this inning, which means both teams got the equal score! The inconceivable results caused one of my kids to cry. She said: How could they say the game was “KIDS OPENING WEEKEND”? It was impolite to all the kids who were your guests!
Finally, the game finished in the 20th inning and the Mets won the game with a result of 2:1. This game started at 3:10pm and ended at 10:04pm, lasting for 6 hours and 53minutes. It was an unforgettable experience in watching baseball game in US for my family and I believe it is a really nice, sweet memory in our mind!
